Dr. Andree Bates' article in Pharma Exec and Jessica Wapner's earlier article in Slate prompted me to share our perspective on the adherence problem. Is it a syndrome or a chain reaction?
I see it as a syndrome: the field rarely talks about C&P because many physicians don't see it as a problem. They probably don't see it as a problem because there is no simple solution for it. Consequently, physicians prescribe medicines that patients don't take. When patients return for follow-up, physicians assume that the medicines don't work because they don't see clinical results. When they hurriedly ask patients if they have been compliant, many patients say what the doctor wants to hear.
