HIV: Low Health Literacy Leads to Poor Adherence

In a study analyzing the relationship between literacy levels and adherence to HIV medication, patients with low literacy were 3.3 times more likely to be non-adherent. Furthermore, this was mediated by low self-efficacy. This suggests that in order to be effective, interventions should address education as well as other behavioural components such as motivation and competency.
