50% of Statin Patients Abandon Rx Within 90 Days

"Consistent with prior studies, at least half of all statin patients in this study discontinued within the first 90 days. Although persistence was poor in both primary and secondary prevention populations, in both cases persistence was significantly greater in patients initiating atorvastatin compared with patients initiating simvastatin (p< 0.001), especially within the first 90 days of therapy."

Authors note a smaller analysis of 13 642 Canadian primary prevention patients, in which simvastatin was shown to have greater persistence compared with atorvastatin, fluvastatin, and lovastatin.
